Bull Terriers were crossed with the old English Bulldog and English White Terrier (now extinct) in the early 19th century. James Hinks, from Birmingham in Great Britain, originally developed the breed between the 1830s and the 1860s.

The original Boston Terriers were a cross between the English Bulldog and now extinct . Around 1865, the coachmen employed by the wealthy people of Boston began to interbreed some of these fine dogs owned by their employers.

The modern day Manchester Terrier traces it's ancestry back to the old Black and Tan which along with the are the two original terrier breeds, from which most other terriers are descended from.
