Waxing Crescent: a small part of the Moon appears lighted and grows larger on successive days.

Not to be a "dickish commentarian", but if that is a new moon, why can you see it illuminated by the sun? Isn't more of a ?
The next phase is a crescent Moon but because more and more of the illuminated face of the Moon will become visible to observers from Earth in the following days it is called a waxing crescent.
